Router Bits in Stock and Adirondack Chair Projects

Happy Wednesday Everyone,

This week we’re excited to re-introduce our own router bits! We’re starting off with the classic ¼ inch two flute up cut bit and we’re hoping to add more options if they are popular.

Why make our own router bits?

There are a lot more good and affordable router bit options online these days than there were seven years ago when we launched Maslow, but we still think that there is some room to improve.

We find that most of the router bits out there are too darn long. That extra length makes other router bits cut louder, flex more, and be more expensive. The longer a router bit is the more it can vibrate as it cuts creating a loud noise. The longer a router bit is the more it can flex and the more leverage it has to flex the machine which can lead to less accurate cuts. Finally the longer a router bit is the more the raw tungsten costs and the more it costs to cut the flutes. By making the bit shorter we can offer what we think is a better router bit (in many situations) at a lower price.

You can find them now in our store.

If they are popular maybe we’ll bring back our single flute router bit and our compression bit as well.

Calibration Testing

We have also been working on rigorous calibration testing this week. We are running every possible calibration configuration at various grid sizes in order to determine if a specific size and configuration yields better results. We will also look at fitness vs accuracy to determine if fitness is, in fact, a good standard for the quality of a calibration.

The goal here is to simplify the calibration procedure so you, the user, won't have to enter so much information during setup. We will report back once we have results. Each test takes about an hour, so wish us luck.

Forums

This week we unearthed some noteworthy projects that got buried in a flurry of posts earlier this summer. They are top-notch so we wanted to make sure to include them in our update, if a little belatedly.

@smarcus3 took the time to convert his Adirondack chair template into DXFs for us back in May, so make sure to try them out!

@tryon also made some Adirondack chairs, which he cut out of one single sheet of plywood!

@Gijs posted this really cute spoon test back in June! I can believe we missed it!

This next one is from this week: @Jordan_Hoff has been hard at work on some shelving for his 3D printing filament.

No firmware update this week (since we’ve gone to every other week), but there is an experimental version in the forums that we would love feedback on!

Have a great week everyone!

-Bar, Anna, and Roman
